request an appointmentWhat Every Pre-Purchase Exam Includes
Every pre-purchase appointment begins with a thorough physical exam, which includes an overall evaluation of body condition, a cardiovascular exam, respiratory exam, brief oral exam, dilated ophthalmic exam, and palpation over the neck, back, and legs. At this time the veterinarian will also hoof test the horse and perform a brief neurological exam.
Soundness Evaluation
The soundness evaluation follows, assessing the horse’s joints and soft tissue structures through flexion tests and trotting in hand, lunging, or under saddle depending on the situation. Our veterinarians will discuss any concerns throughout the duration of the exam and answer any questions you may have, and a written report will be provided to the buyer. Comprehensive Pre-Purchase Exams
A comprehensive pre-purchase exam in the U.S. includes all of the above as well as a full set of radiographs of the front feet, fetlocks, knees, hocks, stifles, neck, and back. This is our preferred series to ensure that we have the most complete image bank, both to guide purchase decisions and to provide a comprehensive baseline.
Additional Diagnostic Options
- Digital radiography (full set or à la carte)
- Digital ultrasound
- Upper airway endoscopy
- CBC/Chemistry
- Drug screening
- Endocrinology screening tests
Ultrasound can evaluate tendons and ligaments, while upper airway endoscopy and bloodwork offer insight into respiratory and internal medicine concerns. Endocrine screening helps identify conditions linked to laminitis. We can also add a dental evaluation or eye exam follow-up if needed.

Pre-Purchase Exam FAQs
Is a pre-purchase exam worthwhile if the horse appears healthy?
Yes. A pre-purchase exam gives you more information about a horse’s health and soundness before you buy. We’ll discuss our findings in light of what you plan to do with the horse.
What does your pre-purchase exam include, and when would you recommend X-rays?
Our exam begins with a physical examination and soundness evaluation, followed by a written report for the buyer. Radiographs and other diagnostics are available; we can discuss which options make sense for the horse and your intended use.
What is your service area for pre-purchase exams?
Our team will travel as far south as Wellington and as far north as Ocala to perform pre-purchase examinations.
Does a pre-purchase exam give the horse a pass or fail?
No. A pre-purchase exam documents the horse’s health and soundness at the time of the exam. Our veterinarians explain the findings so you can decide whether the horse suits your goals.
Should I attend the pre-purchase exam?
We encourage buyers to attend when possible so they can see the evaluation and ask questions in real time. If you cannot attend, we will review the findings with you by phone.
Why would I add a drug screen to the exam?
A drug screen can help detect medications that may mask lameness or alter behavior during the exam, giving you more confidence in the results.
How long does a pre-purchase exam take?
The time varies depending on the diagnostics selected. A comprehensive exam with a full set of radiographs takes longer than a basic physical and soundness evaluation.
