Our exam begins by sedating your horse and using a speculum to open the horse’s mouth. This allows our veterinarian to look at each tooth individually, identifying any abnormalities or problems within your horse’s mouth. Sedation keeps your horse relaxed and makes a complete, safe examination possible.
Floating for a Balanced Mouth
Through skilled floating by one of our veterinarians, we can achieve occlusal equilibrium, or “a balanced mouth.” This is the term used to describe smoothing enamel points, correcting malocclusion, balancing dental arcades, and correcting other dental problems. A balanced mouth helps your horse chew efficiently, accept the bit comfortably, and maintain healthy body condition.
An annual dental exam and appropriate teeth floating help to prevent periodontal disease and ensure any abnormalities are identified and addressed in a timely fashion. Dental care is a core part of every preventative medicine program.
Advanced Dental Services
We also offer advanced services, including dental radiography and molar and incisor tooth extractions. Dental X-rays help us evaluate tooth roots, sinuses, and surrounding bone that cannot be fully seen during an oral exam. Extractions are performed at our air-conditioned clinic as part of our equine surgery services.
Common Dental Problems Your Horse May Be Experiencing
- Sharp enamel points causing lacerations of the cheek or tongue
- Retained caps in younger horses
- Hooks on molars
- Abnormal or uneven bite planes (wave, ramp, or step mouth)
- Periodontal (gum) disease
- Incisor abnormalities (uneven or unlevel incisors) that can impede molar occlusion
Signs Your Horse May Need Dental Care
Dropping feed, slow eating, weight loss, head tossing, resistance to the bit, foul breath, or nasal discharge can all point to dental problems. Because dental pain can also affect performance, we often coordinate dental care with lameness and sports medicine evaluations.
Equine Dentistry FAQs
Does my horse need a dental exam even if they’re eating normally?
Yes. Horses can have dental problems before they show obvious trouble eating. An annual oral exam helps us identify issues early and determine whether floating or other care is needed.
What can dental X-rays reveal that an oral exam alone might miss?
Dental radiographs allow us to assess parts of the teeth and surrounding structures that we cannot fully evaluate by looking inside the mouth. They can help us investigate a suspected dental problem and plan treatment.
What is teeth floating?
Floating is the process of filing down sharp enamel points and correcting uneven surfaces on a horse’s teeth so the mouth is balanced and comfortable.
Why is my horse sedated for a dental exam?
Sedation keeps your horse calm and comfortable and allows our veterinarian to safely use a speculum and examine every tooth thoroughly.
At what age should my horse have their first dental exam?
Young horses benefit from early dental exams to check for retained caps and developmental issues, and every horse should have an oral exam at least once a year.
When does a horse need a tooth extraction?
Extractions may be recommended for fractured, diseased, or loose teeth, or teeth causing infection. Dental radiographs help us determine whether extraction is needed.
Can dental problems affect my horse’s performance?
Yes. Sharp points or painful teeth can cause head tossing, bit resistance, and other behavior or performance problems under saddle.
