Diagnostics for Sub-Fertile Mares

When a mare has trouble conceiving or maintaining a pregnancy, our on-site laboratory allows us to perform uterine cultures, cytology, and biopsies to identify infection, inflammation, or other underlying problems. Small volume uterine lavage and individualized breeding management help give these mares the best possible chance of a successful pregnancy. Learn more about our reproduction facilities.

Foals

Early foal examination is a key aspect of ensuring the health, well-being, and future development of a young horse. An initial check-up by your veterinarian will assess the overall health of the foal, checking for any signs of illness, injury, or congenital abnormalities. At this time your veterinarian can also provide a vaccination schedule based on your foal’s needs, considering the mare’s immunity and local disease risks. For a full list of neonatal services see below:

  • Foaling assistance
  • Mare and foal post-foaling examination
  • Neonatal management
  • Diagnosis of “failure of passive transfer”
  • Hyperimmune plasma

Mare and Foal FAQs

When should I schedule a reproductive evaluation before breeding my mare?

Contact us while you’re planning the breeding. We can review your mare’s history, evaluate her reproductive health, and discuss the monitoring and timing she may need.

Can you help breed my mare using cooled shipped or frozen semen?

Yes. We offer artificial insemination using cooled shipped or frozen semen and ultrasound monitoring to help determine the best time to breed your mare.

What is fetal sexting?

Fetal sexting uses ultrasound during a specific window of pregnancy to determine whether a mare is carrying a colt or a filly.

Why is twin reduction important?

Twin pregnancies carry a high risk of complications for the mare and foals. Early ultrasound allows us to identify twins and reduce to a single pregnancy.

What causes a mare to be sub-fertile?

Uterine infection or inflammation, age-related changes, and anatomical problems are common causes. Uterine culture, cytology, and biopsy help us find the cause and plan treatment.

When should my newborn foal be examined?

We recommend examining your foal within the first day of life to assess overall health and check for failure of passive transfer.

What is failure of passive transfer?

It occurs when a foal does not absorb enough antibodies from the mare’s colostrum. It can be diagnosed with a blood test and treated with hyperimmune plasma.
