Who Is a Good Candidate for Embryo Transfer?
Embryo transfer is a great option for performance mares that need to stay in work, older mares that have difficulty carrying a pregnancy, and genetically valuable mares whose owners want more than one foal from them. Before beginning, our veterinarians perform a reproductive evaluation through our mare reproduction services.
How Embryo Transfer Works
The donor and recipient mares are synchronized so their cycles align. The donor mare is bred by artificial insemination, often with semen from our stallion services or shipped from another farm. About a week after ovulation, the embryo is flushed from the donor mare’s uterus, evaluated in our laboratory, and transferred into the recipient mare. Embryos can also be packaged and shipped to another facility if required.
After Transfer
The recipient mare is checked for pregnancy by ultrasound and monitored throughout gestation. When foaling time arrives, our neonatal care team is ready to support the mare and foal. Learn more about our full equine reproduction program and facilities.
Embryo Transfer FAQs
What is equine embryo transfer?
It is a procedure in which an embryo is collected from a donor mare and transferred into a recipient mare, who carries the pregnancy to term.
Can my mare keep competing during embryo transfer?
Yes. Because the recipient mare carries the pregnancy, many donor mares can continue their training and competition schedule.
Can embryo transfer be done with frozen semen?
Yes. The donor mare can be inseminated with cooled shipped or frozen semen.
How is the embryo collected?
The embryo is collected by flushing the donor mare’s uterus with fluid, which is then filtered and examined in our laboratory to locate the embryo.
Why is synchronization important?
The recipient mare’s cycle must closely match the donor’s so her uterus is ready to accept and support the embryo.
Can you ship embryos to another facility?
Yes. We can package and ship embryos when required.
